DDOs, Constraints and SQL Filters - presented by John Touhy, Chief Technology Officer, Data Access Worldwide

This session will focus on how Data Dictionaries use constraints and provide you with the information you need to take full advantage of filtered record finding. This will touch on how to define constraints, how constraints are managed by the runtime and how to mix SQL filters with DD constraints.

Web Application Deployment - presented by Steve W. Meeley, Vice President Development, Data Access Worldwide

As the excitement about Web Framework applications increases, many developers are beginning to focus on some key concepts in the deployment of web applications. In this session we will cover the basics of DataFlex web application deployment. For this presentation, Stephen will demonstrate deployment using cloud-based Amazon EC2 services and also discuss load balancing using the DataFlex WebApp SPLF Server and web application load testing using automated tools like LoadUIWeb.

Introducing DataFlex 2014 - presented by John van Houten, Senior Software Engineer, Data Access Worldwide

Following the dramatic DataFlex Web Application Framework advances delivered in Visual DataFlex 17.1, many were surprised to see another rich feature list so soon in Version 2014 / 18.0, the latest of DataFlex. John will give an overview of the enhancements, new features and benefits in DataFlex 2014 / 18.

Developing Custom Controls for Web - presented by John van Houten, Senior Software Engineer, Data Access Worldwide

The DataFlex Web Framework of is particularly well-suited for developing on-line database applications. Relevant controls are available in the studio but in practice you may want to use other components in your applications whether you purchase them or develop them yourself. John will show how to integrate custom controls in the web framework.

Using c# code in DataFlex - presented by Marco Kuipers, IT Manager, NCI

You might need to outsource or be given some very specific C# code. How can you use this code in your DataFlex Windows or Web project. In this session we’ll look at how to wrap the C# code into a DLL that can be used in DataFlex via FlexCom.

Moving from Embedded database to MS SQL - presented by Marco Kuipers, IT Manager, NCI

In this session we start with a workspace project using embedded SQL. We briefly discuss the free versions of MS SQL and commence the conversion of the database to MS SQL. After a short demo to show it ‘just’ works, we’ll apply some really cool magic that is now available to us.

The committee of the DataFlex Developers and Users Group is excited to announce that our next annual Corroboree will be held in Bali, Indonesia in November later this year. The conference will run from the 7th to the 9th of November and will feature a range quality presentations around the Data Access product suite and its usage. We have secured an all inclusive conference package including airport transfers, 3 nights’ accommodation and all meals. Pre or post conference training opportunities will also be available, more details soon.

Bali is a delightful part of the world. The people are Hindu and incredibly friendly and honoured by tourists coming to see their paradise. Bali is a province of Indonesia and its main airport is Ngurah Rai Denpasar (DPS). There are many direct flights to Bali, although you might find (especially from Europe or USA), that flying via the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta will save you time and possibly money.

Our resort is on the beach in a lovely area full of restaurants, clothing boutiques and other shops. We are just far enough away from the real hustle and bustle but within 30 minutes walk you are right in the town that never sleeps, if you prefer.

Activities can be booked prior to arrival or at the resort and include surfing lessons, para-sailing diving, as well as cultural trips, white water rafting, elephant riding, monkey forest, play golf in an extinct volcano, cycling etc. So perhaps bring your family and make this a holiday.

Venue

The 2013 Corroboree will be held at the Jayakarta Beach Resort in Seminyak, Bali.  Included in the conference fees this year are 3 nights accommodation at this resort.  Packages for both Single and Twin share will be available.

Conference Details

Fees for the event are as follows:

  • $275 per person Conference only (includes all meals but no accommodation)
  • $875 for 1 conference attendee + 1 guest sharing accommodation (includes all meals and accommodation)
  • $765 per person Conference + single occupant accommodation (includes all meals and accommodation)

All prices are in US dollars.

Registration for the event is now open, and the registration form found here.

Training

Data Access have confirmed that John van Houten will be attending the conference and that a day of training on the Webapp Framework will be available.

We can confirm that the training will be held on Wednesday the 6th of November

WebApp Framework Training for Corroboree 2013

This course describes the Data Access’s new Web Application Framework and gives a hands-on explanation of how to build sophisticated Web Applications with: user login, data entry views, data entry grids, tree views, modal dialogs, lookup lists, report generation and secure document serving.

In the process the course will explain the underlying technology, client-server application considerations, data synchronization, the framework classes, security considerations, session management, user login and rights management.

Students will build applications using the DataFlex Studio IDE and all code written in the DataFlex programming language using the new WebApp Framework class library. Reports are written using Visual Report Writer and will be integrated into the web application. The course will not teach Visual Report Writer.

A discussion of techniques to extend your application styling and extending the WebApp Framework classes will also be covered.

Is this course for you?

John will be presenting a version of the class that he presented at Synergy 2013. Some of this material was unveiled for the first time at Corroboree 2012. If you didn’t catch it last year, you want to be there. If you attended last year’s session there will be some overlap but it will be a good opportunity to see what’s new in the released product (there are a lot of changes since last October) and to review what you’ve already learned.

Pre-requisites

Knowledge of DataFlex Object Oriented Programming plus a basic understanding of Web Applications will be expected. Students will not need to be experienced in HTML, CSS or JavaScript but a basic understanding of HTML and CSS will be helpful.

Don’t forget!

Students who wish to participate in hands-on exercises must have Visual DataFlex 17.1 installed and running on their machine before turning up for the course. The must also verify that the installed Web Order sample will compile and run in a browser. You should have Internet Explorer 9 or higher installed or any up to date release of Firefox or Chrome.

Training will cost $250 which includes lunch and morning & afternoon tea.  There is no seperate registration process for the training - once you register for the main conference you will be asked by one of the board members if you are also interested in attending training.  If you indicate that you are, then the amount will be added to your invoice.

Training

This year we have the opportunity to run a 2-day JavaScript and AJAX training session run by Mike Peat from Unicorn InterGlobal. Mike is well known amongst his peers in the DataFlex community and has made presentations at past Synergy, EDUC and Corroboree events.

As a recent quote from an attendee below will attest this is an excellent opportunity to update your skills and take advantage of Mike’s unique insight on the subject matter.

“I attended the JavaScript training Mike facilitated at the EDUC 2010 conference. The quality and level was very pleasantly intense and Mike’s humour helped staying focused. I can recommend Mike, and in specific this training to anyone that knows a thing or two about JavaScript but needs to know more about the objects, closures and namespaces amongst other advanced techniques.”

The cost of this 2-day course is $550 per person and runs on Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th October following the conference. Bookings can be made on our website.

The Training will start at 10:30am on Saturday the 8th of October and will finish at approximately 6:00pm.  The following day the training will start at 9:00am and run until 5:00pm.  Further altereations to the running times of the training will be communicated to the attendees directly via email or at the conference.
